Volunteers Needed - Lend a Hand to Help Rebuild Houston

Updated :: Fri, 02/13/2009

If you need help with projects that do not involve rebuilding, Volunteer Houston has people who can help you. Non-rebuild projects include general clean-up tasks such as tearing out carpet.

Meanwhile, the Greater Houston Long Term Recovery Committee (GHLTRC) launched its Volunteer First program in April. On the first repair day April 4, more than 40 volunteers arrived to help out.
With the exception of July 4th, there will be a repair/rebuild workday blitz the first Saturday of each month.
There is great need for volunteers, both skilled and unskilled.

The Greater Houston area still has extensive damage caused by Hurricane Ike and repair work is expected to be ongoing for at least the next year.

GHLTRC is looking for volunteers to help repair Ike-damaged homes for low-income families, seniors and disabled people. They are also in need of a volunteer project leader.

The facts:

·         Will need 50-100 volunteers the first Saturday of each month
·         Projects include roofing, sheetrock repair, and a variety of projects
·         Work may include heavy lifting
·         Supervision, training, tools and equipment will be provided
·         Volunteers 15-18 years need to be accompanied by an adult

Repair and rebuild projects will be ongoing throughout the next year—not only first Saturdays.

To volunteer, go to www.volunteerhouston.org and fill in the online Volunteer In-Take/Skill Sheet.

If you have any questions, please call the Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) at 713-964-0299 or email ikevolunteer@volunteerhouston.org. You can also visit Volunteer Houston on Facebook.
