How to Appeal an SBA Decision

Updated :: Tue, 03/03/2009

If you have been declined for an SBA loan, you may request "reconsideration" by submitting additional information you believe will overturn the initial reason or reasons for denial.

All requests must be submitted in writing within six months of the date of the first decline letter. You do not have to fill out a new application, and the case will be assigned to a new loan officer for processing.

If you are again declined, you may request another reconsideration, this time at a "at a higher level."  Again, the case file will be assigned to a new loan officer for processing. Requests for this must be received within 30 days of the first reconsideration denial.

All requests must include justification to reverse prior decline actions.

As of March 3, more than $103 million in SBA loans has been approved for homeowners in Harris County, and another $55.4 million for businesses in Harris County.

The main reasons for denial are unsatisfactory credit history and lack of ability to repay the loan.

Requests for reconsiderations and appeals can be submitted to:

U.S. Small Business Administration
Processing and Disbursement Center
14925 Kingsport Road
Fort Worth, TX 76155-2243

Or by fax to: 817-684-5752.

SBA can be reached over the phone at 1-800-659-2955.

Assistance is also available at a Disaster Loan Outreach Center. For more information, visit http://houstonhurricanerecovery.org/node/246
